Innovation in Education

Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Structures, Flight Mechanics and Control are the core courses pertaining to major domains of Aeronautical Engineering. The fundamentals and advanced topics were integrated with practical knowledge by adopting project / product based learning through CDIO approach.

Conventional laboratories are upgraded to over unique skill based courses on UAV design, Wind Turbine, Autopilot Design, Structural Health Monitoring and Aerial Photography to introduce real time advancements in Aerospace society.

The curriculum allows students to earn credits through publishing quality scientific articles, online courses, industry / abroad faculty crash courses on recent advancements and industry training.

Centre for Design & Prototyping: Comparing the multi-copter parts by using 3D printing manufacturing facility to integrate rapid prototyping at design level problems.

Department Highlights

  • Established National Eminence Facility on “Gas Turbine Engine Bearing Test Facility” funded by GTRE,DRDO.
  • Ongoing projects on Autonomous Drones via Indo-Korea Joint R & D, Customized UAV development for drone Industries and consultancy projects on energy sector enables real time experience to the students.
  • Collaborative R & D with HAL, GTRE and GE paved the way to faculty and students to accumulate real-time technology development in Aviation, Defence and Space Technology.
  • Established Flight Lab for dedicated UAV design, prototyping and testing facility which enables the students to experience dynamic technological environment.

Low speed wind tunnel facility

Students are testing the electric propulsion system to estimate performance of propeller for various flight velocities.

Students Achievements

Students developed Hybrid UAV for surveillance and participated along with leading UAV Industries, IITs and NITs in Drone Olympics – Aero India 2019, Ministry of Defence.

The vehicle secured 2nd Position and appreciated by Hon. Defence Minister.

Student Forums

Vel Tech chapter is a student-run forum (supported by MIT, USA) to disseminate Autonomous technology and space technology among students. The activities include internship colloquiums, Research talks, company visits, Technical events, and project contest.


Aviator Club - organized by the Flight Lab to train the students to design, manufacturing and testing of UAVs, it also facilitates to explore National and International flagship events like Aero India – Drone Olympus and SAE Aero India.

  • Pursue successful careers and excel in higher studies by applying aeronautical engineering technologies, standards and critical thinking to solve complex problems and address societal needs at both national and global levels

Program Outcomes

The Program provides opportunities for the Students to achieve the following Outcomes

  • Engineering knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, natural science, computing, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization as specified in WK1 to WK4 respectively to develop to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  • Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyse complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions with consideration for sustainable development.
  • Design/development of solutions:Design creative solutions for complex engineering problems and design/develop systems/components/processes to meet identified needs with consideration for the public health and safety, whole-life cost, net zero carbon, culture, society and environment as required.
  • Conduct investigations of complex problems:Conduct investigations of complex engineering problems using research-based knowledge including design of experiments, modelling, analysis & interpretation of data to provide valid conclusions.
  • Engineering Tool Usage: Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources and modern engineering & IT tools, including prediction and modelling recognizing their limitations to solve complex engineering problems.
