Fachhochschule Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences
The University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf, Germany (Fachhochschule Düsseldorf, FH D for short) was founded on 1 August 1971 by combining several renowned regional educational institutions. FH D started lectures with 120 professors and around 2200 students under the leadership of the founding rector, Professor Hans Albert Klüfer.
Today, the University is one of the largest of its kind in the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia and offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary range of subjects. Approximately 8000 students are taught in 34 degree programmes in 7 faculties/departments by nearly 200 professors and around 100 assistant staff members.
The educational and research emphasis at FH D has a strong practical and interdisciplinary approach. The university guarantees that course contents are connected to practical work necessities since they are based on extensive professional experiences in commerce, industry and research of all our professors and lecturers. Thus, practical courses are indeed an integral component of the university’s study programmes. In addition, FH D has contact with companies and institutions that offer internships and part-time jobs in Germany and abroad, particularly in engineering, social and cultural sciences and business studies. Mentors supervise students before, during and after the internships.
FH Aachen – Aachen University of Applied Sciences
The FH Aachen – Aachen University of Applied Sciences is one of the biggest Fachhochschulen in Germany with roughly 11,300 students, 220 professors, 300 contract lecturers, and 340 assistants. It is specialized in certain topical areas (e.g. technology, engineering, business, design). It must not be confused with the RWTH Aachen, which is also located in Aachen. FH Aachen ranks as the first best among the universities of Applied Sciences in Germany in the fields of Electrical and Mechanical engineering. Ten Faculties offer 48 Bachelor’s, 22 Master’s and three cooperative degree programmes. In 2011 the external and research funding added up to 12,2 million Euro. The FH Aachen is situated in Aachen and in Jülich.
FH Aachen offers 48 Bachelor’s, 22 Master’s and three cooperative degree programmes. Dual degree programmes have been developed in recent years at the FH Aachen in close cooperation with the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK). Moreover some of the degree programmes are international oriented studies (IOS) which means that the courses are given in English during the first two semesters and in German in the following semesters
The FH Aachen maintains partnerships with 170 universities around the world. The students benefit from this cross-border network because it enables them to gain valuable overseas experience in the framework of their studies. The Department of International Affairs is the contact concerning all international topics at the FH Aachen.
Fachhochschule Kiel University of Applied Sciences
Kiel University of Applied Sciences as we know it was founded on 1 August 1969 as a result of the merger of several state-run schools of engineering and technical colleges which in themselves can look back on a history of more than 100 years. Its campus is located directly on the waterfront of Kiel’s firth.
With its approximately 7,100 students (winter term 2013/2014), the Kiel University of Applied Sciences is the largest institution of its kind in Schleswig-Holstein. Those interested in studying here can choose from a wide range of options: around 35 Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, supplementary degrees and continuing education courses are offered by the faculties of Computer Science & Electrical Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Media, Social Work & Health, and Business Management. The campus is located in city of Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, although the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences is to be found not far from Kiel in the depths of rural Osterrönfeld, near the North Sea Canal City of Rendsburg.
Hochschule Bochum University

The long-term close links to industry, business, service providers, and many other organisations in the region of the central Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr area) gives the Hochschule Bochum the edge.
Since the professors and lecturers at the Hochschule Bochum all worked for years in their core areas, the university has built and maintains close partnerships with the real world of business and engineering.
This relationship has resulted in research partnerships, joint development projects, and ample opportunities for students. To date the six departments, Architecture, Civil Engineering and Surveying and Geo Computer Science, Mechatronics and Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Business and Management offer 23 such undergraduate and postgraduate pathways.
Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences

1. Profile-shaping research promotion
In 2010 the University established two research institutes (the Institute of Visual Computing and the Institute of Safety and Security Research) based on an external evaluation. The institutes will be funded for up to five years, which will enable them to establish and expand competitive research structures. When the funding period expires, they should be largely self-financing, using the third-party funds acquired.
In addition, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University awards research professorships internally for a two- to five-year period. On the following pages, you will also be informed about BRSU’s other prestigious research institutes and competence centres.
2. Stimulating research promotion
The University fosters the extension of the portfolio by further research areas with great potential. To achieve this, it grants start-up funds and reduces the project managers’ teaching load for a limited period of time.
3. Graduate Institute
By participating in PhD projects, universities of applied sciences consistently advance the Bologna process and ensure competitiveness in the struggle for the best students and researchers.
The University has established the Graduate Institute to create a pool of PhD projects, to develop structured PhD and graduates’ programmes and to support young researchers.
4. Centre for Science and Technology Transfer
The University has established the Centre for Science and Technology Transfer as a central service and contact point to reinforce the transfer to business practice and the acquisition of funds.

Technische Universitat Braunschweig (TUB)

A complete engineering branch covering architecture, civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering, informatics and mechanical engineering;
A strong natural sciences branch with an excellent professional network within TU Braunschweig;
Business sciences, social sciences, humanities, educational sciences and subject-specific teaching skills, all of them well integrated into TU Braunschweig.
All the departments contribute to defining the university’s focus. TU Braunschweig is part of the TU9 group of leading technical universities in Germany, and for each of its core disciplines, the engineering subjects, it ranks among the top 9 universities in Germany.TU Braunschweig focuses on the following strategic research fields:
Mobility1;
Infections and active agents;
City of the future (currently under development).These are complemented and interlinked by various overarching topics.
• The focus areas are implemented through emerging interdisciplinary research centres in cooperation with non-university institutions and industry.
• TU Braunschweig’s fields of study should in general orientate research towards these three key fields. Top-level research, even if outside these fields, is explicitly encouraged.
• TU Braunschweig aims to make substantial contributions towards meeting the challenges that society faces in these areas. In this regard, it is a member of thegroup of top (German) technical universities.
• As a technical university, TU Braunschweig places its emphasis on thesciences and their development, distinguishing itself from universities that exclusively practice applied sciences.
• TU Braunschweig engages in knowledge transfers in the areas of technology transfers, start-up support, and further education.
• TU Braunschweig provides implementable innovations (through patents and more).
