INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Personal security is of paramount concern to Indian women. Despite the concerted efforts of the state security, Chennai reported maximum incidences of crime against women in Tamil Nadu. Unlike other technological innovations, urban youth were quick to adopt the mobile phone technology, particularly smartphone adoption. Personal security apps installed on smart phones is perceived as an innovation to curtail threats to personal security. This study analyzes apps usage amongst women students in Chennai, their awareness about personal security apps and the degree of its adoption among them.

Innovation Decision Process theory (Roger, 1983) provides a framework to explain an account of adoption of personal security apps among women students. The stages include: Awareness of personal security apps, persuasion that these apps are reliable, the decision to choose which personal security apps would be the most effective, the implementation of apps, and finally, confirmation that the apps is a ‘secure’ companion in times of need.

Using convenient sampling, an online survey was conducted amongst women students aged 18-25 years and 20 such respondents were interviewed. It was found that young women were early adopters of the Smartphone technology and potential adopters of personal security apps. Though they were aware of the innovation, only one-fifth of them had installed personal security apps on their phone. Amongst those who have installed, more than half of the respondents disagree that the tool would bring immediate help in times of need. Respondents trust their interpersonal network of family and male friends over personal security apps. They strongly believe in interpersonal relationships and thus, are not persuaded that these apps are reliable. Celebrity endorsement through a television commercial helped in creating awareness about personal security apps but did not lead to decision and implementation. Further, respondents did not find the apps as top of mind recall in times of need. Thus, respondents don’t confirm such apps as a secure companion. They also trust their community and the state security, making them believe that they live in a safe place. Lack of adoption amongst peers, requirement of Internet and poor network are some of the reasons for inadequate diffusion of this innovation.

Biotechnology for Biological Wastewater Treatment

Generally, people think that Biotechnology cannot be used utilized in biological wastewater treatment plants except its useful only for research studies!! However, the fundamental nature of wastewater is highly dynamic due to the inherent complexity of microbial communities and their interactions in relation to predisposed environmental conditions.

Biotechnology plays a crucial role in increasing the efficiency of biological wastewater treatment process. If we could understand what kinds of micro-organisms are present in any given wastewater; we can improve the process of wastewater treatment significantly.

Unique Characteristics of Wastewater: Wastewater is of several different types and from different sources; each contains a unique characteristics, but generally high in nutrient load (Nitrogen, Phosphorus) which can be exploited if micro organisms are used to feed on them.

Do you know that micro-organisms help in the treatment process! Micro-organisms take in the pollutants present in wastewater just as we would take in food and thereby reduce the concentration of such pollutants. They multiply every time they have good amount of food and the right conditions for growth. The more times they multiply, the more they are able to tackle heavy pollutants in wastewater. This is the fundamental principle of Biological wastewater treatment, the reason why biological treatment is very popular among wastewater treatment methodologies. This is much cheaper than using chemicals or other methods.

The major domains of Biotechnology in wastewater treatment are classified as Metagenomics, Metatranscriptomics and Metabolomics; each referring to the type of information we require about the microbial community.

Next Generation sequencing methods are used to sequence the genetic information of microbial communities. Some of these methods include Fluorescent in situ hybridization commonly known as FISH, 454-Pyrosequencing and Illumina sequencing. These sequencing methods quickly read through the vast amounts of genetic code and give the nature of microbial associations present within a given system such as a wastewater treatment plant.

Interpreting this vast amount of generated data is the next challenge. There are several molecular visualization methods such as the KRONA chart, which can give a complete picture of the evolutionary relationship between the vast numbers of micro-organisms present in a particular environment. If such methods are used in routine analysis of wastewater in treatment plants, we can surely increase the efficiency of biological wastewater treatment methods and is very economical.

BIOROBOTICS –THE HUMAN AID

The popular science fiction books and movies showcase about the Androids (humanoid robots) like the Commander Data” in Star Trek which is competent in all its functions. Unlike the fictions, the real human aids are the Bio-robots which are used to replace the diseased body part of a soldier who lost an arm/leg in the battle or an athlete who lost a leg in an accident and many other such scenarios.

Biorobotics is a field of engineering which is a collective study of various domains such as biology, bionics, physiology, cybernetics, genetic engineering etc. The intersection of the living with the non-living matter for better living is the reflection of biorobotics. This field was formerly known as synthetic biology

Creating Biorobots

Biorobots are developed with the living biological organisms emulated or simulated through Genetic engineering processes and designed via artificial means. Biorobots can be programmed or designed to be like a living organism, mechanisms which can replace limbs or even the Terminator. Biorobotics has been helping biologists in understanding the complex animal-environment relationship to make Bio-robots.

Some of the Recent Advances in Biorobotics

  • BCI (Brain Computer Interface)

Brain-computer interface (BCI) is the collaboration between a brain and a device that enables signals from the brain to direct some external activity, such as control of a prosthetic limb. For example, the signal is transmitted directly from the brain to the mechanism directing the cursor, rather than taking the normal route through the body’s neuromuscular system from the brain to the finger on a mouse. BCI can enable a person suffering from paralysis to write a book or control a motorized wheelchair or prosthetic limb through thought alone.

Bionic eye (artificial silicone retina)
Bionic eye, is a visual device which is intended for restoring functional vision in those suffering from partial or even total blindness. With the artificial retina device, a miniature camera mounted in eyeglasses captures images and wirelessly sends the information to a microprocessor (worn on a belt) that converts the data to an electronic signal and transmits it to a receiver on the eye.

There are other applications like the Biomimcry which is primarily used to study wild life.

Biorobotics is the next generation technology which is used to support many defected people to function in ease without any difficulty.
The smile of the visually impaired who could see, the lame athlete who could run and the paralyzed who can function are the success stories of Biorobotics

Kanavugal – In the Making

Kanavugal (means Dreams) is a one-minute stop motion animation film produced by the students of Visual Communication and Multimedia. During the first two years of their study, students are trained in the nuances of fine arts, graphic design, story-telling, and photography. The students of Multimedia are also trained in editing and sound design. The film “Kanavugal” is a culmination of the students acumen in these areas. They were encouraged to ideate, conceptualize, write the story, prepare for the production and finish up-to post-production. Under the guidance of an expert faculty team, the students not only learnt the techniques of stop motion animation but also the ability to work in a team, complementing each other’s skill set. It was absolutely wonderful to note that they worked like a professional crew.

Hybrid Cars – The latest trend in the Automotive Industry

The best mode of transportation has always been the most sought after need of all time. From luxury vehicles to performance driven vehicles, are always on demand in the automotive industry. There are many versions of hybrid vehicles like for example a simple motorized-pedal bike (moped), diesel-electric buses, diesel-electric mining trucks and so on. There are other hybrid models like the submarines, where their fuel may be either nuclear-electric or diesel-electric.

The recent trends of hybrid cars have risen above all the other categories of cars. The earliest hybrid cars launched are Toyota Prius (1997), Honda Civic Hybrid (2002) and many more. Ford Company was the first to introduce the hybrid SUV called The Escape in 2004.

Hybrid car defined in simple words
In simple words, car that uses two different ideas to move (both the gas and electricity share their energy) is called a hybrid car.

Mechanism in a hybrid car
The base model of the hybrid car is supported by the fuel engine and also keeping the charger as a bank battery. Usually, the change between the battery power and fuel engine is based on the need. In a full hybrid car, the electrical energy is used while the car needs less power. The gasoline energy is used when the car needs more power. Thus at lower speeds the battery drives the vehicle and at higher speed the gasoline drives the vehicle. This technology has been used in cars like Toyota Prius and Ford Escape.

Advantages of Hybrid Cars: Very less pollution, Better mileage, Less emissions, Batteries need not be charged by an external source and Less dependence on fuels.

The evolution of hybrid cars have taken wings of creativity to establish better hybrid car models

The students of Vel Tech won the Best of Best Award at the International Student Car Competition, a Hybrid Vehicle Creative Technology Category, May 2018 organized by Korean Auto-Vehicle Safety Association (KASA).

The fun of a hectic day at college

I want to break free is the jargon generally used by young students on a hectic day. The madness of daily routine, copping up with the academic curricula and of course the hassle of being the top gear in every activity with the peer. Sometimes when the day is crazily loaded with work all that one wants to scream out is,” I need my Me time “. Sometimes all that you seek is the fun time with friends.

Here are few suggestions that an aspiring student engineer could do:

  1. Do Attitude, looking at every mountain of work as something that you can conquer.
  2. Accept the work as an Adventure, every work is a challenge to adventure and of course it has its own metrics to cross over to achieve.
  3. Set a Game plan, the steps to take to finish the task.

At the end of it, feels complete and definitely there will be no back logs.

Now, that you have completed all that you had to do and been such a sport, break the blues and have your fun time and me time.…

It’s a well known habit of most of the youngsters to copy the resume of their peers and just tweak their personal and educational details. Let’s look at this from a HR/recruiters perspective. The first thing a recruiter gets to know about you is through your resume. An appealing resume will result in an interview call. If the resume is similar to any tom, dick and harry, it will only be trashed and be forgotten.

The very thought of writing a resume daunts many. The anxiety of writing the resume wrong overtakes the mind. However, a good resume could even be the difference between success and failure in landing to your dream job. Here are some tips to help you write a quality resume.

  • Determine your job search objective. Consider it as the bull’s eye your hitting to impress the reader. If you write your resume without a clear objective in mind, it will also across as unfocused to those who read it.
  • Your resume is a marketing tool. Think of yourself as a product and employers as your customers. Highlight your features, benefits, accomplishments and what makes you unique in a clear and concise format.
  • Have the perspective to build the resume to obtain an interview; good performance at the interview will get you the job.

  • Use bulleted short sentences rather than lengthy paragraphs. This format is easier for someone to quickly scan the resume and still absorb it.
  • Mostly resumes are reviewed in 30 seconds; bold the sentences that talk about your strengths. Put those strong points first where they are more apt to be read.
  • Use the employer’s expectation as the keyword to structure the resume.
  • Accent your positives. Leave off negatives and irrelevant points.
  • Preferably, limit the length of your resume to 1-2 pages.
  • Ask a friend to take an eagle view on your resume; their views can help you make constructive changes.

Now that you have a quality resume, take the chance and put it to use.

For further assistance on writing a quality resume, Veltechians can contact their placement department.

Are you an Emotionally Intelligent Engineer ?

More often an enterprising student is accessed through his/her level of IQ and expertise in technical knowledge, which acts as the qualifier to gain entry into the reputed organizations. Hard core training is offered to build the skill sets essential to help the student to be more prolific, purpose-driven and contribute better in their “to be assigned” roles.
In his recent article on “What makes a Leader ?“, Daniel Goleman claims that the distinguishing factor between a successful person from an unsuccessful one is their Emotional Intelligence, not just their technical skills or their cognitive ability.
While Technical skills form the foundation for anyone seeking an entry into a career, the growth pattern seems to be highly influenced by certain “soft” aspects which are categorized under Emotional Intelligence of an Individual.

What is Emotional Intelligence? Does it really matter?

Emotional Intelligence (EI), also known as Emotional Quotient (EQ), is the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, understanding different feelings and using this emotional information towards cognitive thinking and behavior.
EI affects your everyday decisions of an individual both at the personal and business levels. Staying happy, motivated, confident, likable, committed, productive, efficient etc., has a direct connect to the EI level.
EI influences your outlook and attitude towards life, a person with high level of EI has a happier outlook towards life and displays a positive attitude at all times. EI acts as the invisible driver towards excellence.

The best way to develop EI

The best way to develop EI is by understanding one’s self, knowing his/her strengths, weaknesses, preferences, values and emotions.
Engineers have challenges at workplace to work in teams to make presentations, pitch in ideas, clarifying doubts in the process and communicating with different departments. Hence, the strong ability to read other emotions and act accordingly plays a key role to succeed. Emotional intelligence can bring the transformation from being a good engineer to becoming a truly successful engineer.
The eager beavers of the present generation stand a better chance of a getting a Job with a higher level of EI.
