Dr. E. Balasubramanian received his Ph.D. in Robotics and Control at Concordia University,
Montreal, Canada. He obtained Bachelors from Govt. College of Engineering, Tirunelveli and Masters from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. He was an Awardee of the Govt. of India Scholarship to pursue his PhD at abroad. Prior to Vel Tech, He worked at College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University and VIT, Vellore. He has published three books, more than 125 articles in reputed Journals, International Conferences, and 7 patents are on the verge of grant. He received grants worth 2 Crore from various Government of India funding agencies such as DST, DRDO, ISRO, DBT, SERB and TNSCST. He has completed 7 funded research projects and 9 consultancy projects under his credit.
He has collaborated with Taiwan scientists under the Indo-Taiwan schema (2013-16) to develop micro aerial flapping wing vehicles and formation control through image processing techniques. He has designed a tabletop test rig integrated with two load cells to measure the aerodynamic forces of flapping wing vehicles funded by DRDO – AR & DB. He has also collaborated with Canadian scientists to develop and deploy UAVs for railway bridge inspection and 3D mapping of Heritage structures. He developed an amphibious UAV to collect water samples in remote water bodies under Indo-Korea research schemes funded by DST, Govt. of India. His team developed UAVs for diverse applications including power line inspection, telecom tower inspection and radiation measurement, environmental monitoring, surveillance and traffic monitoring etc. His team at the Centre for Autonomous System Research is working on control of SWARM of UAVs for landslide monitoring funded by ISRO and mapping of Seaweed across the lake using UAV under DBT funding.
His students’ team won the first prize of Rs 5 lakhs in a National-level competition organized by Power Grid Corporation Limited and the prestigious telecom sector Aegis Graham bell award for the best innovative business model 2014. He has guided 6 PhD students and many UG as well as PG students who have been well established in their career. He delivered many keynote talks during the International Conferences held in Taiwan, Canada and Korea. He was also invited for research talks at various Universities, Colleges, Public forums and delivered several webinars to motivate young minds. Especially, he delivered scientific talks to the school students through
INSPIRE Programme sponsored by DST.
His research interests are Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Robotics, Control, Additive Manufacturing and Mechanism Design.
