Biotechnology is an Engineering discipline that has strong foundation in Biological Sciences. It is a multidisciplinary field having combined applications from Agriculture, Medicine, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, and many others.

Why study Biotechnology

Modern Biotechnological processes have generated a wide range of new and novel products including enzymes, drugs and new agricultural crops that are resistant to drought and pests.

The student undertaking the course will gain insights on both the Biological Sciences and engineering. The curriculum will cover Life-Sciences subjects such as Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Cell Biology and Engineering subjects like Bioprocess Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Thermodynamics, Mass Transfer etc. The student gets a hands-on experience through research projects and becomes competent research and employment at various organizations including industry.

Department of Biotechnology has put major of its thrust to the areas of Agriculture, Medicine, Environmental and Industrial sectors of Biotechnology.

As far as research is concerned, recent advances in synthetic biology, bioenergy, bioremediation, virtual cell, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and bio-nanotechnology have made biotechnology even more powerful. Recent discovery of conduction of electricity by DNA and its behavior as a superconductor and realtime gene editing such as CRISPR has opened a new realm in modern science.

In future biotechnology will have profound impact in world economy. Biotechnology is a golden tool to solve some of the key global problems like global warming, global epidemic diseases and above all poverty.

Can I study Biotechnology as an Engineering discipline without Maths ?

Yes! Biotechnology majorly focuses on Biological subjects which require essential mathematics which will be taught to you as part of the Foundation courses. These can be learnt easily by the novice student without any formal background in Mathematics in the Intermediate level.
