Ladies and Gentlemen,
Whole hearted greetings to all of you from Vel Tech Dr.RR & Dr.SR Technical University
Very Good Morning to you all.

On behalf of the Chairman and members of the Trust, Board of Management, Faculty, Staff and Students of our institute, I welcome you all for this solemn occasion of the 6th Convocation of Vel Tech Dr. RR & Dr.SR Technical University.

It is a matter of pride, privilege and a fulfilling satisfaction to inform this August Body the accomplishments of Vel Tech during the preceding year. Vel Tech, founded and nurtured by a great visionary and a true traditional Indian, Prof. Col. Dr. Vel R Rangarajan has witnessed a phenomenal growth leading to unprecedented accomplishments in multiple sectors. The dedicated and benevolent personality of Dr. Rangarajan has lead the University to scale new heights of excellence with sustainability.

At this juncture, It gives me great pleasure and a sigh of utmost satisfaction to share some of the developments and achievements that this University could accomplish in recent times.

As always has been the case, the University maintained a perfect equilibrium in addressing the contemporary challenges and accommodating the future national perceptions in the field of higher and professional education.

The management, administration, and the academic community of the University have put in concerted efforts to perceive and seamlessly integrate the dynamic imprints of the education system entangled with national industrial and economic developments which culminated in the production and competent trained human resources for global and national needs. The University has never deviated from its strong conviction to infuse highly balanced education with required proportions of theory, practice, skill development and industry exposure in the process of fortifying the students to face the real world competition.

Apart from more than 201 MoUs actively being pursued by the Vel Tech with both National and International counterparts, the University took up a few more tangible measures to strengthen the international linkages. The four member team consisting of three directors and CMT madam presented the profile of the Vel Tech and its preparedness for implementation of CDIO in its curriculum at Asian region CDIO council in China, where in Vel Tech was elected to be the first member from India for worldwide CDIO frame work. It may be mentioned here that the CDIO is an initiative of the prominent global educators like MIT, Chalmers and others to reform Engineering Education to reach its destination as envisaged by the industry and ABET, USA. The Vel Tech has already established the ‘Conceive – Design – Implement- Operate’ work space in our Research Park to facilitate our students to work towards their innovations beyond their working hours.

Vel Tech’s initiative to collaborate with Victoria University of Canada with the initiation of a pilot project to study and monitor the structural health of long bridges and heritage structures using UAV s under the aegis of India- Canada IMPACTS with a 3.0 million dollar Canadian support with Rs. 1.5 crore matching grant from DST is a testimony to the quality research being carried out at Vel Tech and its credibility in the professional regime. The Indo-Korea initiative on ‘Design and Development of Autonomous Amphibious Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and UAV Mountable Water sampling devices for water based applications with an initial grant of Rs. 1.17 crores is one more addition to Vel Tech’s focussed research activity. The enhanced increase in H index to 87 is yet another land mark in the increasing research activities of the University.

I am extremely happy to announce that NAAC has awarded A Grade to Vel Tech with an un-presumably high scale of 3.17 CGPA, the topmost among the first cycle of accredited institutions in Tamil Nadu.

There has been a multi fold progress in the creation of modern and need of the hour infrastructure complimented by state of the art teaching aids through fully equipped active classrooms for each academic department. These developments, reinforced by the committed efforts of the academic community has evolved into a highly focused student centric teaching and learning centres capable of addressing the national and global challenges in the realm of higher education. The Choice Based Credit System is yet another achievement that spread its roots widely during 2015-16, by adopting in 10 cadres of courses leading to six degrees of choices.

Apart from the multifaceted developmental approach in the field of science and technology, the Vel Tech’s perceptions on the need and power of communication through audio visual means have lead to the establishment and strengthening of the technical and professional capabilities of the School of Media Technology and Communication. The enhanced capabilities of the School have adequately contributed to the initiation of three major academic programmes focussing around visual communication, digital media and animation and electronic media and film making at B.Sc. level with a provision to start a M.Sc. programme on visual communication from the next academic year. This humble and prospective activity was launched on the auspicious Ugadi day by a great national singer and a Guinness book entrant, Padmabhushan Dr. P. Susheela.

We are proud to say our students of Automobile and Mechanical Engineering won the Outstanding Award in global green car student competition conducted by Ministry of Road and Transport, South Korea successively second time.

The adorable strength of Vel Tech has always been its academic and student community. The Techno Cultural Festival conducted in March 2016 with Vel Tech’s brand name ‘LAVAZA’ meaning ‘to bring the brains together and work with unity and synergy’ is an exemplary reflection of bringing out the hidden talent and innovation of Vel Tech’s student fraternity. The participation of more than 2000 students in more than 22 pertinent events in a two day marathon has crossed its bounds beyond academics and intellect.

The Vel Tech Dr.RR & Dr.SR University has been rewarded with a special recognition from the Association of Indian Universities by being invited to conduct three major national sports events. The University’s continued support to provide financial support to the deserving students, is a reflection of the Management’s approach towards a just and humane society.

The organ donation camp organised by the NCC cadets in association with Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Chennai registering a massive number of over 350 healthy individuals as organ donors is a milestone in the annals of Vel Tech.

It is always gratifying moment to witness more than 653 students graduating from the University to their wings into this universe to make their career while contributing to the growth of science and technology and society. It is with pleasure I express my appreciation and gratitude to the teachers, support staff and the student community for their outstanding contributions and the unassuming cooperation, without which this University could not have achieved these developments.

It is with joy and satisfaction I take this opportunity to congratulate all the Graduates, the recipients of the research degrees, winners of prizes and medals on this occasion and look forward to their contributions.

The University is fortunate to have distinguished luminaries like Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, Former President of India, Dr. V.K.Saraswat, Former Director, DRDO, Dr. Narayanamurty, Chairman Infosys, Dr. Sumanthran, Hinduja Automobiles, Mrs. Mallika Srinivasan, TAFE, Dr. G M Rao, Chairman of GMR Industries, Dr. Avinash Chander, Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, and DG, DRDO, Padmasri Dr. AS Kiran Kumar, Chairman, ISRO, Sri Y S Chowdary, Hon’ble Minister of State for Science and Technology and many more on its campus.

Complying with this year Dr. Sekhar Basu and Dr. MR Girinath have been honoured each with D.Sc and Hon. Doctorate- for their outstanding contributions in the fields of Science & Technology and Medicine respectively. On behalf of the University I thank them profusely for accepting our proposal and to be here with us today.
